Gold & Iron

2 02 2008

I was in Virginia on business, and, as usual, I thought I’d pick up some caches near my hotel. This one was a multi-cache that required you to go through a mall, getting numbers in various ways from various stores, then using those number to assemble the Dewey Decimal Code number of a book in the local library. Strange as it may seem, I’ve also found caches in libraries in Phoenix and UCSD.

The hint said that the title of the book was the same as the title of the cache, so I thought I’d try to game the system by going to the library and looking up the book title in the catalog. It didn’t work, and it serves me right.

So I followed the instructions and ended up with something that couldn’t possibly be a Dewey Decimal number. I went back to the hotel room and, going over the instructions again, found my mistake.

The next day, I went to the library…

…went to the area indicated by the Dewey Decimal number…

…and look what I found!

So let that be a lesson to you. Don’t try to game the system! You’ll just cause yourself extra work. Usually. ;-)

Really enjoyed this post. We’ll have to try creating a cache like that at our local library. I used your photo as a link to your post from our blog. Hope that’s OK. You can view it at The Northwoods Geocats

The creativity of some. And the willingness of others (librarians)

Awesome.
